The choice of fiber is not arbitrary. Traditional thangka supports are almost exclusively woven from either fine cotton or, for higher commissions, wild silk. The reasons are both practical and symbolic.

Cotton, grown in the lower valleys of Nepal and India, offers a toothy yet smooth surface that grips mineral pigments without absorbing them too greedily. It must be tightly woven—typically 40 to 60 threads per inch—to prevent the fine lines of a deity’s face from bleeding into the weave. Linen, while durable, is too coarse and slubby for the microscopic precision required in a 1-centimeter-wide lotus petal. Hemp is similarly rejected for its irregularity. The Modern Assault: Why Machine-Made Canvas Is Killing the Art

The Cheap Imitation Problem

In the last twenty years, a flood of mass-produced thangkas has entered the global market. These are printed on synthetic polyester canvas or cheap machine-woven cotton that has been pre-primed with acrylic gesso. They are sold for $20 in tourist markets in Delhi and for $200 on Etsy. They look bright, they look intricate, and they are utterly dead.

The problem is not just aesthetic. It is ontological. A thangka is not a painting; it is a support for meditation. The Revival: A New Generation of Weavers and Painters

The Looms of Bhaktapur and the Young Masters

There is hope. In Bhaktapur, Nepal, a cooperative of Newari weavers has begun producing thangka-grade cloth with traditional hand-spun cotton. They use the same wooden looms that their great-grandmothers used, but they now weave to the exact specifications of contemporary thangka painters.
